Simplicity That Has Value

Oliver Wendell Holmes said,
"I could give a fig about simplicity this side of complexity, but I will give my life for the simplicity on the other side of complexity."

Simplicity on this side of complexity tries to avoid the pain, struggle, honesty and deep thinking that creates simple answers that are also powerful. It is only simplicity that has bush-whacked it's way through the complexities of self, society, theology, mission, vision and values that can give crystal-clear guidance in life.

We all crave, I believe, a more simple life. We yearn for values that ring true and give guidance; Wisdom that cuts through the fog of confusion and shines a beam of light on the truth we must pursue; Convictions that are simple and deeply held such that I have the ability to override my selfishness, temptations, anger and laziness.

The truth is that this kind of conviction, wisdom, strength and simplicity only comes to those who authentically wrestle in and endure through the tunnel of chaos of the complexities of their soul.

Then, on the other side, comes simplicity that powerfully guides us and deeply fulfills us.

I heard a wise person once say, “the only thing standing in the way of our vision and potential are the hard decisions we are not willing to make.” Something like that, you my remember it better. ;-) Keep bushwhacking your way through to simplicity.

  2. Jim: Thanks for the thoughts. People long for simplicity because of the pain and struggle of complexity. Uncertainty and ambiguity are tough to deal with.
The problem is that we avoid the tough process of getting to the simplicity.
    Blessings on you,
    Dr John
